The New Federal Lead Based Paint Law - Renovating, Repairing or Painting a Home, Child Care Facility or School containing lead-based paint (RRP)

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has enacted a new federal law. Beginning in April 2010, federal law will require that contractors performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must be certified and follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination.

Lead Based Paint has not been manufactured since 1978 but if you want to renovate a home built before that, the Law pertains to you. Common renovation activities like sanding, cutting, and demolition can create hazardous lead dust and chips by disturbing lead-based paint, which can be harmful to adults and children. Childhood lead poisoning remains a major environmental health problem in the United States.
